Neighbourhood Connectors. This is a fantastic project funded by both parish councils. They provide a volunteer-based service which aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness among older people and vulnerable adults in the Horsleys. Commitment could be a few hours a week to a few hours a month, depending on your availability. Training is provided.
The Wheel of Care offers help, support and transport to people living in the parish of West Horsley. They also provide four regular clubs: a weekly Scrabble Club, weekly Seated Dance and Movement to Music classes and a monthly Film Club. The clubs are open to all – you don’t need to live in West Horsley to attend them and there’s no need to book in advance. Transport can be arranged to/from the clubs for those living in East and West Horsley, Effingham and Ockham. Tel: 01483 281703 Mon-Fri 10am-noon (excluding Bank Holidays) for help and further information.
There are several different volunteering roles available, such as volunteer driver, Duty Officer, befriender, committee member or helper at one of the clubs. The commitment could be as little as one hour per month and it’s flexible to fit in with other things. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get involved in your local community and help make a real difference.
East Horsley Care offers assistance with transport to those living in East Horsley. Ring 01483 284802 and leave a message with your name, contact number, date of appointment, time of appointment & place of appointment. The duty controller will then ring you back.
Horsley Community Fund. Founded in 2010 in partnership with the Community Foundation of Surrey to inspire local giving for local needs – now entering its 8th year it is doing just that and going from strength to strength.
Up to April 2018 they have awarded over 43 grants totally £33,000, however there is more demand for support and funds than we are able to meet which means that we need to fundraise – if you are interested in supporting them or holding an event just get in touch! If you or anyone you know could benefit from their support please also get in contact: Clare Mathias on 01483 281755 or email Claritaclare@gmail.com for more information.
Grace & Flavour (above) is a community garden situated in West Horsley. The “scheme has become part of the fabric of the village, with new friendships forged over the digging fork (and kettle) and new social networks extended way beyond the garden wall.”
The Orchard is a “little area of quiet” located in the triangle space between Ripley Lane and The Street, opposite Cranmore Lane, in West Horsley. There are wonderful apple and damson trees, the fruit of which is free for any villagers to pick. There are also bird tables so it is a lovely space to watch birds, allow children to play or simply to sit with friends and have a chat or even just sit and have a quiet think! Parking is tricky. The parish ask that you do not use the parking area in Old St Mary’s . And of note, it is a dog free zone.
